South-Central’s gang lines were the unspoken map of my childhood. I drifted at the edges — never fully initiated, never fully safe — claiming affiliation when it kept fists and bullets at bay. On our block, the Gladiators, a ragtag crew led by characters like Makeetha, Yellowbird, and Gangsta Frank, flew the Brims/Bloods’ colors while the Crips ruled Compton, Watts, and most of South L.A. Survival meant knowing who owned which corner — and when to keep your head down or throw a sign.
